The biopharmaceutical industry is a powerful driver of economic growth in the U.S. PhRMA member companies invested more than $51.1 billion in research and development in 2013, and, since 2000, have invested over $550 billion in R&D.3 According to the National Science Foundation, the biopharmaceutical sector accounts for the single largest share of all U.S. business R&D, representing about one in every five dollars spent on domestic R&D by U.S. businesses.4

This leads to high-value jobs for Americans: according to Battelle, the U.S. biopharmaceutical sector supported a total of about 3.4 million jobs in 2011,5 including approximately 810,000 direct jobs6 and generated nearly $800 billion in economic output. This includes spending with tens of thousands of vendors, large and small, that provide services or supplies to America’s biopharmaceutical research companies.
