I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2009 and told I was at high risk and treatments must work quickly or I might die within a year. Fortunately a pill-based regimen worked immediately, which allowed me to have an autologous stem cell transplant and save my life. I have had almost no sign of cancer in almost six years.
I went from being worried about dying, to worrying about side effects to worrying about basic things in daily life within a year. I was able to be there to see my daughter graduate from college, help my mother in law with her health issues, go back to work – and help others via patient advocacy.
Innovative treatments saved my life, enabled me to work and allowed me to be there for the lifecycle events that make life worth living. It provided true value to me.
